The theme of this prototype was "Sports," and while the meaning of that was open to interpretation at the time, I knew I wanted to complete the Classic Series trilogy. My goal was to recreate a Mode 7 aesthetic, which is associated with the 16-Bit console era. Brainstorming some recurring themes of 16-Bit games, I ended up getting stuck on the idea of "surfing," which appears in one of my favorite Sega Genesis games, Shinobi III, as well as in several relatively popular titles. Working off of that, I whipped up the Mode 7 surfing aesthetic in the initial prototype.
A few ideas floated around for the revision, but it was difficult to pin down what needed to happen. We originally wanted some sort of flight or glide mechanic, where the player would use the waves to build up momentum and then glide through hoops in the air for points. For a while the wave behavior was changed to a "wobble," and a lot of work was done to try and create a sort of Rainbow Road of surfing, wherein the player would glide between water platforms. We ended up scrapping all of this and just throwing in some barrels!
Changelog:
